Our Commitment to Sustainability

Handcrafted with integrity. Made to last generations. Rooted in Welsh craftsmanship and environmental responsibility.

At Eirlys Studio, sustainability isn't an afterthought—it's woven into every decision we make. From the timber we select to the finish we apply, we're committed to creating products that honor both the natural world and the people who use them. Our boards are designed not for obsolescence, but for permanence.

FSC-Certified Timber

Every board begins with responsibly sourced, FSC-certified hardwoods. We work exclusively with suppliers who demonstrate sustainable forestry practices, ensuring forests are preserved for future generations.

Made in Wales

Local production means reduced transportation emissions, support for Welsh employment, and complete transparency. Every board travels meters, not miles, from our workshop to your door.

Built to Last

The most sustainable product is one that never needs replacing. Our boards are engineered for decades of daily use, resisting trends and planned obsolescence in favor of timeless quality.

Zero-Waste Workshop

Nothing goes to waste. Offcuts become smaller boards, while wood shavings and sawdust power our workshop heating systems. We continuously refine our processes to minimize waste at every stage of production.

Responsible Sourcing

We believe exceptional craftsmanship begins with exceptional materials—sourced responsibly, chosen thoughtfully, and handled with care.

FSC Chain of Custody Certification: Our workshop holds FSC Chain of Custody certification (Licence Code: FSC-C167448, Certification Code: INT-COC-002236). This certification verifies that all our Maple, Cherrywood, and Walnut timber comes exclusively from Forest Stewardship Council certified sources. FSC certification ensures timber is harvested using practices that maintain biodiversity, protect indigenous rights, and support forest regeneration.

Traceability: We maintain complete supply chain transparency. Every batch of timber can be traced back to its origin, giving us—and you—confidence in its ethical provenance.

Long-term Partnerships: Rather than chasing the lowest price, we've built lasting relationships with select suppliers who share our values. This allows us to influence forestry practices positively and guarantee consistency in quality and sustainability standards.

The Power of Local Production

Our Ferndale workshop isn't just where we make boards—it's the heart of our commitment to sustainable, ethical manufacturing.

Reduced Carbon Footprint: By keeping production in Wales, we dramatically reduce transportation emissions. Our boards travel short distances to customers across the UK, and even international shipping begins from a central, efficient location.

Energy from Waste: We utilize wood shavings and sawdust generated during production to power our workshop heating systems. This closed-loop approach transforms manufacturing byproducts into clean energy, reducing our reliance on external heating sources and ensuring nothing goes to waste.

Supporting Local Economy: Every purchase supports skilled Welsh craftspeople, maintains traditional woodworking expertise, and contributes to the economic vitality of the Rhondda Valley.

Quality Control: Proximity allows us to oversee every stage of production personally. We're not relying on distant factories with opaque practices—we're hands-on, accountable, and proud of what leaves our workshop.

Community Investment: We're embedded in our community, contributing to local causes, training apprentices, and preserving Welsh manufacturing heritage for future generations.

Designed for Generations

The most sustainable product is one that lasts. Our boards are intentionally over-engineered to withstand decades of intensive use.

Premium Materials: Dense hardwoods, pharmaceutical-grade adhesive, and food-safe finishes ensure structural integrity and safety throughout the board's lifetime.

Reversible Surfaces: Dual working surfaces effectively double the lifespan, allowing you to rotate as needed and extend usability.

Restorable: Unlike plastic or bamboo alternatives, wooden boards can be sanded and refinished if they become worn. We provide detailed care instructions to help you maintain your board indefinitely.

Timeless Design: We avoid fleeting trends in favor of classic, enduring aesthetics. An Eirlys board purchased today will look just as relevant in 20 years.

Repair Service: Should your board require professional restoration, we offer refinishing services to bring it back to its original condition rather than encouraging replacement.

Thoughtful Packaging

Our commitment extends beyond the product itself to how it reaches you.

  • Recyclable Materials: All packaging—boxes, tissue, and protective materials—is fully recyclable or compostable.
  • Minimal Branding: We use simple, elegant packaging without excessive printing or wasteful embellishments.
  • Right-Sized Boxes: Custom sizing reduces material waste and shipping volume, lowering our carbon footprint per delivery.
  • Plastic-Free: No plastic wrap, bubble wrap, or synthetic padding. We protect your board using paper-based materials exclusively.

Questions About Our Practices?
