About This Board
The Story
Named after Cader Idris, the storied mountain throne in southern Snowdonia, this board embodies the quiet strength of Welsh peaks. But the real story begins with Eirlys | our founder's mother, who believed the small details in life deserved the most attention. That philosophy lives in every board we make. Crafted from American cherry with its distinctive warm, reddish-brown tones that deepen beautifully over time.
The Craft
Twenty-one steps. Each board passes through processes refined over 38 years of traditional Welsh joinery | from selecting FSC-certified timber kiln-dried to the perfect UK humidity, to hand finishing and wet sanding that removes every standing fibre. The result is a surface so silky smooth you'll notice it the moment your hands meet the wood. Only when a board meets every quality standard is it heat-stamped with the Eirlys mark by hand.
Why End Grain?
End grain construction isn't just aesthetics | it's engineering. Vertical wood fibres create a self-healing surface that absorbs knife strikes rather than resisting them. Cut marks close naturally, your blades stay sharper longer, and the board develops character rather than damage.
Built to Last
At 5 cm thick and 2.6 kg, Cader has the reassuring heft of something built to outlast you. This isn't a board you'll replace in a few years | it's one you'll pass down. The weight keeps it planted on your worktop. The thickness prevents warping over decades. Pick it up and you'll understand immediately | this is what quality feels like.
The Design
Fully reversible with purpose. One side features precision-machined juice grooves for carving roasts and catching runoff. Flip it over for a smooth prep surface that doubles as an elegant serving board. Integrated handles make transport from workspace to table effortless.
Who It's For
Home cooks who value their tools. Entertainers who want function and beauty. Gift buyers looking for something that will genuinely be used and treasured. Anyone ready to invest in craft over convenience.
Make It Yours
Prefer no handles, juice groove or stamp? Simply leave a note at the bottom of the cart drawer and we'll ensure your commission is made exactly as you want it.
Engraving | £19
Add a personal touch with custom engraving. Each engraving is CNC-machined for precision then hand-finished for depth | blending modern technology with traditional craft. We can engrave all characters (emojis not supported). Standard positioning is on the longer edge, opposite the Eirlys stamp. If you'd prefer a different placement, just add a note at the bottom of the cart drawer and we'll include it in your commission. Any questions? We'll reach out before starting production, or you can email support@eirlysstudio.com before placing your order.
Photos are for demonstration only. Your board will be unique due to natural variations in the wood grain.

About American Cherry
Prized by furniture makers for centuries, American cherry offers a perfect balance of hardness and workability. Its warm, reddish-brown heartwood deepens to a rich patina with age and light exposure | a board that grows more beautiful the longer you own it. Slightly softer than maple or walnut, cherry is exceptionally gentle on knife edges while remaining durable enough for daily use.
Why Signature Series?
At 5 cm thick, Signature Series boards are nearly 50% thicker than our Core and Companion ranges. This substantial profile provides exceptional stability, reduces warping over time, and delivers the reassuring heft expected of heirloom-quality boards. End grain construction offers superior knife protection compared to edge grain alternatives.
Care Instructions
Daily Care
Wipe clean with a damp cloth after each use and dry immediately. Stand upright or lay flat to air dry | never leave sitting in pooled water. Clean juice grooves thoroughly after each use to prevent buildup.
Monthly Maintenance
Oil monthly with food-safe mineral oil to maintain the wood's natural lustre and protect against moisture. For optimal protection, we recommend following with a board butter or beeswax blend if you don't have allergies | your board arrives treated with mineral oil only to ensure it's safe for everyone. Apply generously, allow to penetrate for 20 minutes, then wipe away excess. Your board will tell you when it needs oil | the surface will look dry or lighter in colour.
What to Avoid
Never soak your board or place in the dishwasher. Avoid leaving in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Don't use harsh detergents or bleach | warm water and mild soap is all you need. When drying, use one of our stands or stand the board on one edge to prevent water ingress | never leave it flat in pooled water.
Watching Cherry Age
Cherry wood naturally darkens over time when exposed to light | this is part of its charm. Your board will develop a richer, deeper colour over the first few months of use. This patina is a sign of quality and authenticity, not a defect.
With proper care, your Eirlys board will last decades and develop a beautiful patina that tells the story of every meal you've prepared.

The Signature Series
Named for Giants
Cader Idris — the "Chair of Idris" — stands as Wales' third highest peak.
Rising 893 metres above the Mawddach Estuary, Cader Idris has inspired myth and legend for centuries. Its name comes from the giant Idris, said to have used the mountain's summit as his throne to gaze upon the stars.
Like the mountain itself, boards in the Cader Signature Series are built to endure — crafted from sustainably sourced hardwoods with the same timeless presence that has drawn travellers to Snowdonia for generations.
